Here at St Andrew’s we LOVE reading!
Throughout the term, the children have been earning reading tokens (for fantastic reading) and have popped these tokens in a box next to the book they hoped to win for their class! Click the video below to see what each class won!
VIPERS is our way of supporting children with their reading comprehension skills; children are explicitly taught the skills of reading (outlined in the National Curriculum and the KS1 and KS2 test domains) through the use of VIPERS.
All children will be working on VIPERS during class reading, whether it is reading as a class, in a small group, or one-to-one with an adult.
What are Vipers?
VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the reading curriculum. They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.
VIPERS stands for
Vocabulary
Inference
Prediction
Explanation
Retrieval
Sequence or Summarise
It would be fantastic if parents could also be referring to VIPERS when you listen to your child read at home! Please have a look at the question stems below to see how you can use questioning to support your child’s reading skills.
